Frequently asked questions about Wurstfreund
What is Wurstfreund?
Wurstfreund is a German hot sauce built on mustard: a sweet and spicy sauce with woodruff and yellow Tabasco chili. It starts sweet, then the chili heat kicks in, with a fresh woodruff note in the background. It is made in small batches in Germany and built for bratwurst and other sausages.
Who is behind Wurstfreund?
Dennis aka German Freak ASMR – you might know the first German mukbanger and ASMR artist from TikTok or YouTube. The idea came to him during a video: the mustard shelf always looked the same, so he mixed mustard with woodruff syrup (Waldmeister) and chili. A year later, he turned it into Wurstfreund.
Is there such a thing as German hot sauce?
Hot sauce is not a traditional German product. For heat, German cooking has relied on mustard and horseradish. A small craft scene exists, and Wurstfreund is one take on German hot sauce: a mustard-based sauce with Tabasco chili and woodruff, made for sausages.
Is Wurstfreund a hot sauce or a mustard?
Both, a little. Classic hot sauces use chili as the main ingredient. Wurstfreund uses mustard as its base, with Tabasco chili dosed carefully in the background. There is heat, but it does not take over. You could call it the most German hot sauce out there: with Tabasco chili, but very, very mild. It is a spicy sauce, just not an ultra-hot hot sauce.
How hot is it really?
1 out of 10 for heat lovers, 3 out of 10 for people who do not like spicy food. You notice the chili, but the sweetness comes first and the chili will not knock you out. Perfect if you like a bit of heat without the tears.
Which mild hot sauce is good for beginners?
For starters, sauces where sweetness softens the heat work well, such as sweet chili, honey mustard or sweet mustard sauces. Wurstfreund has a small chili kick (3 out of 10 for people who do not like spicy food): the yellow Tabasco chili adds just a little heat, the sweetness comes first, followed by mustard and the sweet, herbal woodruff note. If you are sensitive, start with a small dab on the edge of your plate. If it still gets too much: this helps against food that is too hot (in German).
Which hot sauce goes with sausage?
Mustard is the classic: usually table mustard with bratwurst, and for hearty sausages also hot mustard (German guide). If you want chili, go for chili sauces or hot sauce. Wurstfreund is a mild mustard hot sauce with depth (heat 1 to 3 out of 10): mustard as the base, plus woodruff and chili. More choice in the hot sauce guide (in German).
What does “swicy” mean?
Swicy is a blend of the words sweet and spicy. It describes food that tastes sweet first and hot second. Wurstfreund is swicy: sweetness from mustard and woodruff syrup, heat from Tabasco chili.
What is woodruff (Waldmeister), and why is it in a mustard sauce?
Woodruff, called Waldmeister in German, is a herb with a sweet, fresh aroma. In Germany it is a familiar flavor for syrup, jelly and drinks. In Wurstfreund, woodruff syrup adds sweetness without going overboard, and together with the Tabasco chili it creates a taste you will not find in a regular mustard.
What does Wurstfreund go best with?
Bratwurst (obviously), white sausage, wieners, bockwurst, salsiccia and merguez. It also works with vegetarian and vegan sausages. Grilled, boiled or from the air fryer.
Where can I buy Wurstfreund?
Online at the Food Narco Shop and the 030 BBQ Shop. In Berlin you can also find it at Boxi Stop and at selected weekly markets and events.

How much does a bottle cost?
€12 for a 200 ml bottle, which is €60.00 per liter. That is more than a supermarket mustard, but Wurstfreund is made in small batches and limited.
What mustard do Germans eat with bratwurst?
Typically a medium-hot mustard, called mittelscharfer Senf. Sweet Bavarian mustard is traditional with white sausage (Weisswurst). Wurstfreund is a new option: a sweet and spicy mustard sauce with a chili kick.
Do Germans use hot sauce?
Traditionally not much. Tabasco is easy to find in German supermarkets, and specialty hot sauces are sold online and at events like the Berlin Chili Fest. Wurstfreund is made for people who want some heat on their sausage without giving up mustard.
What is the German word for hot sauce?
There is no established German word for it. The closest translations are “scharfe Soße” (spicy sauce) or “Chilisauce”. The English term “Hot Sauce” is used in German as well.
What is the difference between Wurstfreund and Bavarian sweet mustard?
Classic Bavarian sweet mustard is usually made from mustard seeds, sugar and mild spices. It is sweet and has no heat. Wurstfreund adds woodruff syrup and yellow Tabasco chili, so it is sweet and spicy instead of just sweet.
Is Wurstfreund just another honey mustard?
No. Instead of honey, Wurstfreund gets its sweetness from sugar and woodruff syrup, combined with chili heat. It contains no honey and is 100% vegan.
What are the exact ingredients?
